Summer Cat Care Tips

July 15 2020

Summer is officially upon us. Cats really enjoy this time of year. After all, they get spend even more time than usual laying around in the sun. However, heat can be dangerous for kitties, so you’ll want to take some ‘purcautions’ to keep your pet cool and purring when temperatures rise. Read on for some great summer cat care tips from me, your Marion, IA area veterinarian.

Water

Cats can’t sweat to cool off the way we can. Therefore, making sure Fluffy always has fresh water is absolutely crucial. Drop a few ice cubes into her bowl on hot days. You may also want to get her a pet fountain. Many kitties prefer running water!

Brushing

Brushing your cat will help keep her cooler by removing dead fur and dander from her coat. It will also reduce the amount of fur you find stuck to your sofa, and hopefully make your kitty feel a bit pampered. Choose a time when your feline friend is relaxed. (That shouldn’t be difficult.)

Cold Treats

Ice cream is a very popular treat among humans, but it really isn’t safe for cats. However, Fluffy can still enjoy some cold treats. Give her a can of chilled tuna in water, or some sodium-free broth. You can also add water to canned food, and then freeze that in small portions.

Cooling Kitty Off

Overheating is a huge concern at this time of year. Keep an eye out for signs that your pet is getting too hot. Panting is often the first thing you’ll notice. This is normal for dogs, but it definitely isn’t normal for cats! Your feline friend may also meow in an uncharacteristic manner, groom herself excessively, or act lethargic, restless, or dizzy. Vomiting and diarrhea are also red flags. If you see any of these warning signs, immediately give your pet water and call your vet. As you’re calling in, you’ll want to take steps to cool your furry friend down. You can wrap her in a wet towel, spritz her with water, or hold her in front of an open freezer.

Dangers

Heat isn’t the only hazard kitties face at this time of year. Parasites, traffic, storms, and wild animals also endanger cats. Keep your pet safe and sound indoors!
