Have you recently adopted your first lizard? If so, you’ve likely just learned quite a bit about caring for your little dinosaur. One thing that is of course very important for reptiles is making sure that their environment is the right temperature. This can get a bit tricky in summer. As your Cedar Rapids, IA veterinarian, I offer some summer care tips for lizards below.
Keep Temperatures Stable
You may need to adjust your lizard buddy’s heating and lighting settings as conditions change. When it’s hot, check the conditions a little more often. If your pet is from a temperate climate, you may want to turn the heaters off during the day when it’s hot out. Ask your veterinarian for specific advice.
Location
Choosing the right spot for your lizard’s habitat is also very important. A reptile habitat that is always in direct sunlight could quickly get too hot. You also don’t want it too close to a fan or AC duct, either.
Monitor Humidity
Many reptiles love humidity. However, your reptilian buddy could overheat if the humidity is higher than it should be. Make sure your pet’s tank has good ventilation!
Hydration
If you have automated misters or dispensers, make sure they are working properly. Reptiles that like baths, such as iguanas, will appreciate some extra soak time. If your pet has a pool, make sure it always has clean, fresh water. Some lizards, such as iguanas, will benefit from having themselves, their food, and/or their environments misted.
Wellness Care
Summer is the perfect time to schedule reptile checkups. You won’t have to worry about your pet getting too cold on the trip! If your tiny dinosaur is due for an exam, schedule one now.
Walking
Some larger lizards, like bearded dragons and iguanas, actually enjoy being walked on leashes. Ask your veterinarian for more information, including training tips.
Watch For Overheating
Reptiles can overheat, just like any other pet. Keep an eye out for warning signs! While these will vary, depending on what type of pet you have, there are some common ones to look for. These include trembling, lethargy, aggression, and disorientation. Your pet may also hide in the coolest area of their vivarium. Contact your veterinarian ASAP if you notice any of these.
