Reasons to Be Thankful for Pets

November 15 2020

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Even in a turbulent year like this one, it’s important to remember to be thankful for the things we do have. Pets are pretty high up on that list! As your Marion, IA area veterinarian, I list some reasons to be grateful for our animal companions below.

Entertainment

It’s always fun watching our animal companions hard at play! Fluffy is absolutely hilarious when she is chasing that elusive red dot, while Fido is extra adorable when he’s running after his favorite stick or ball. Even smaller pets, like birds and hamsters, can be highly entertaining to watch. The way our furred, feathered, and scaled friends always keep us laughing is definitely something to be appreciative of.

Health Benefits

Did you know that people with pets tend to be healthier than those who don’t have animal companions? Pets not only provide emotional support, comfort, and friendship, they also keep us healthy. For instance, kids that grow up with pets often have stronger immune systems than those who don’t. And people with dogs tend to be slimmer than those without canine companions. All those walks add up!

Unconditional Love

Your animal companion doesn’t care how much you make, who you’re dating, or how you dress. They just want to spend time with you! No matter what curveballs life throws at you, your beloved pet will be there for you, offering comfort, support, and, of course, cuddles.

A Child’s Best Friend

Pets benefit youngsters in many ways. They teach kids about empathy, kindness, and friendship and provide comfort on bad days. They also make great playmates and cuddle buddies!

Protection

Man’s Best Friend probably gets most of the credit for this one. Dogs have been helping us guard our homes and livestock for thousands of years. Even small breeds often bark to let their humans know there’s someone at the door. However, cats, birds, and other pets have also stepped up to assist their human friends.

Cuddles

Another thing that’s great about pets? They can be super affectionate. While some animals are cuddlier than others, even aloof pets often enjoy spending time with their owners. Purrs, tail wags, and other signs of love and affection are all priceless gifts, and are truly things to be grateful for.
