Tips For Adopting a Rescued Rabbit

February 15 2020

February is Adopt A Rescued Rabbit Month! Rabbits have some wonderful qualities that make them great pets. They don’t need to be walked, don’t make much noise, and can be very loving and cuddly. They’re also absolutely adorable! As your Marion, IA vet, I offer some tips on adopting a rescued rabbit below.

Spend Time With Floppy

Just like people, bunnies all have their own personalities. Some are cuddly and gentle, some are mischievous and playful, and some are, well, rather bossy. Spend time with Floppy before finalizing paperwork, and make sure she’s a good fit.

Do Some Research

Rabbits have very different needs than dogs and cats. You’ll need to provide Floppy with a clean, comfortable cage; fresh water; and lots of chew toys. Proper nutrition is also very important. Fresh grass hay should make up the bulk of your pet’s diet. This can be supplemented with commercial food and safe fruits and veggies. Before adopting a bunny, do plenty of research on rabbit care, and ask your vet for tips.

Bunnyproof

Bunnyproofing is an absolute must. Rabbits have open-rooted teeth, and must chew constantly to prevent painful dental issues. You’ll need to remove, protect, or secure anything dangerous, such as toxic plants, wires and cords, furniture legs, baseboards, and small or sharp objects. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Be Committed

Bunnies are often rehomed, which is very sad. One reason for this is that people just fall for those adorable faces, without really knowing what rabbits need. (This is a huge issue around Easter.) Keep in mind that rabbits can live over 12 years with proper care. If you aren’t committed to caring for Floppy for the rest of her life, choose something with less longevity.

Find A Bunny Vet

Floppy will need a vet that is experienced with rabbits. Bunnies don’t typically need vaccines, but they do need regular exams, as well as spay/neuter surgery.

Prepare To Be Entertained

Rabbits are very, very entertaining! Floppy will keep you smiling with her bunny antics. Prepare to be charmed by the binkie, which is basically a bunny happy dance.

Pat Yourself On The Back

Giving an animal in need a great forever home is a wonderful act of kindness. That’s definitely something to feel great about!
