Resolutions for Pet Owners

January 1 2020

Happy New Year! As we leave 2019 behind, many people are thinking about their goals for the upcoming year. It’s always good to regroup and focus on the things that are really important to us. Why not include your pet in your resolutions? Read on for some suggestions from me, your Marion, IA area veterinarian.

Offer Good Food

Proper nutrition is very important! We know, our animal companions are very good at convincing us to spoil them with yummy snacks. Treats are fine, but don’t go overboard here. Your pet will be much healthier—and therefore happier—eating a proper diet. Ask your vet for recommendations, including portion sizes and suitable snacks.

Keep Up With Wellness Care

It’s always easier to prevent an illness than to treat a full-blown medical problem. This is true for both pets and people. Stay up-to-date with your pet’s recommended vaccinations, and keep up with their exams and parasite control products. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. If you notice any signs of sickness, make an emergency appointment right away.

Make Time To Play

Playing benefits pets both mentally and physically. It keeps them active, prevents boredom, and helps them burn off excess energy. Take time every day to play with your furred or feathered friend, even if it’s just a few minutes. This will be fun for you, too!

Take Photos

There’s just no such thing as too many cute animal pictures. You may want to try downloading a pet camera app. Some of these have features that make taking pet photos easier, such as sounds that capture pets’ attention. Capture some adorable photos of your pet this year!

Keep It Clean

Pets fill our homes with love and laughter. They also tend to fill our homes with fur and dirt. Cleaning up after your pet is much easier if you stay on top of things. Make cleaning a daily chore, and keep up with it.

Enjoy Some Down Time

Life can get pretty stressful in this day and age. It’s important to take time to just unwind and relax. There’s no better way to do that than with your furred, feathered, or scaled friend. Spend some quality time with your animal companion every day.
