One of my favorite things about dogs is the fact that they are so playful. Fido is absolutely adorable when he’s bounding after his favorite toy! Playing isn’t just fun for our canine buddies, though: it’s actually very beneficial for them. As your Marion, IA vet, I’m always interested in helping people keep their pets happy and healthy. I list some benefits of playing with your dog in this article.
Exercise
Proper activity is just as important for dogs as it is for people. Running and jumping is a fun way for Fido to get his workout in!
Mental Stimulation
Playing is also good for your furry friend’s mind. This is very beneficial, especially as your pooch grows older.
Beat Doggy Boredom
Dogs are very smart, and tend to get into trouble when they have nothing to do. Playing can help reduce or eliminate many bad behaviors, such as digging and chewing. This is a great way to keep Fido occupied … and out of mischief!
Burn Excess Energy
Do you have a furry bundle of zoom on your hands? Playing will help your pet burn off some of his energy. After a fun play session, your canine friend will be calmer and more interested in naps and belly rubs and snuggles than in chasing after the cat.
Bonding
Playing with Fido will also make him feel loved and cared for. When you take time to hold a rope toy for your dog to tug at, or throw a ball or stick for him to catch, he’ll understand that you’re doing something just for his benefit. This will ultimately strengthen the bond between you.
Smiles And Tail Wags
Spending a few minutes playing with your canine pal will definitely brighten up his day. It’s also fun for you! Fido’s joy and cute antics are bound to put a smile on your face.
Tips
When playing with your dog, be sure to use toys that are the right size for him. Fido could hurt himself with playthings that were made for pooches that are bigger or smaller than he is! Also, keep in mind that not all toys or activities are right for every dog. Ask your vet for specific advice.
