Ferret Day is April 2nd! These little guys aren’t as popular as dogs or cats, but they do make very fun and charming pets. As your Marion, IA vet, I am happy to offer great care for ferrets. I discuss these mischievous little furballs below.
Basics
Ferrets are quite small, and rarely weigh more than 4 pounds. Males usually get to be about 15-16 inches long, while females average about 13-14 inches. Although their average lifespan is about 6-8 years, they can live up to 12 years with good care.
Temperament
These little guys can form very strong bonds with their humans, and often like to cuddle. Of course, one of the best things about ferrets is that they are so fun to watch! They are very smart, and are quite good at solving puzzles. They also enjoy having pals, so you may want to get more than one.
Care
Your pint-sized pal will need a roomy, comfortable cage. You’ll also need to provide dishes, a water bottle, hiding spots, hammocks and tents, and, of course, lots of fun toys. Just like any other pet, ferrets also require a good diet and regular veterinary care to stay healthy. In between veterinary appointments, you’ll need to clip your pet’s claws, clean his ears, and give him hairball remedy. Ask your vet for specific care advice. You’ll also want to ask for tips on ferretproofing, which is a definite must.
Sticky Paws
Your cute pet will need some time out of his cage every day. As you may know, ferrets are notorious for being, well, thieves. They love to snatch things and hoard them. In fact, pickpockets used to train them to be their ‘helpers.’ Keep anything that is personal or valuable in high, secure spots your adorable burglar can’t reach.
Spoiling Your Ferret
If you have a pet ferret, this is a great time to pamper your furry friend! Ferrets are curious and playful, so toys are always a great choice. Treats are another good option. You can give your tiny buddy hard-boiled eggs or cooked, plain beef or chicken. If you want to go all-out, make your pet some duck soup. Just be sure to only offer foods that are safe for ferrets. Ask your vet for specific advice.
