Cute Ways to Pamper a Guinea Pig

Do you have a pet Guinea pig? These little guys are super cute! Often chosen as children’s pets, Guinea pigs—also known as cavies—are lovable, gentle, and fairly easy to care for. Like any other pet, Guinea pigs need a suitable environment, a proper diet, and regular veterinary care to thrive. But how does one spoil a cavy? As your local Marion, IA vet, I offer some Guinea pig care tips below.

Cozies

Cozies are basically tiny tents for small animals. They are very popular with Guinea pigs! These little furballs love having small, safe places to snuggle up in. You can buy cozies in stores or online, or you can make your own.

Buddies

Guinea pigs are very sociable, and are always happiest with buddies to hang out with. If you only have one cavy, consider getting your pint-sized pal a friend. Just be sure to only house same-sex pets together. Otherwise, you could find yourself with more pets than you bargained for!

Comfy Cage

Make sure your Guinea pig has a roomy, comfortable cage. We recommend getting one that is at least 7.5 square feet for a single cavy. If you want to give your little buddy extra room, get a cage with more than one level.

Box Castle

Make a little box castle for your Guinea pig. This is a great project for kids! You also don’t have to worry if your cavy nibbles on his new home. Just be sure to remove any tape or staples first.

Free Time

Let your tiny pal have some time out of his cage. Be sure to do some petproofing first! Remove anything that could be dangerous, such as toxic plants, small or sharp objects, and plastic bags.

Toys

Cavies need lots of toys, both for entertainment and also for their dental health. You can make great toys out of things like cardboard and even plain paper. Avoid anything with small or sharp parts, as well as items coated in paint, stain, or dye.

Snuggles

Unlike most pocket pets, Guinea pigs are quite affectionate. Many of them actually enjoy cuddling up with their humans! Pay lots of attention to your beloved pet, and let him sleep on your lap if he likes.
