Do you have a pet rabbit? Floppy is a very cute and lovable pet. Just like any other pet, bunnies need proper care to thrive. Your bunny won’t be able to tell you if she is sick, so it’s important to watch for signs of illness. As your Marion, IA vet, I list a few common red flags below.
Unusual Behavior
The better you know your pet, the easier it will be for you to spot changes in her behavior or activities. Withdrawal, lethargy, crankiness, unusual vocalizations, and a reduced interest in play are all red flags.
Unkempt Fur
Healthy bunnies groom themselves frequently. If Floppy’s coat is dull, matted, or greasy, you may have a sick rabbit on your hands.
Mobility
Limping is another red flag of sickness in bunnies. Floppy may also stagger or walk with a strange gait if she is ill.
Strange Postures
Bunnies that are sick may hunch over, sit stiffly, or press their bellies into the floor. Floppy may also sit in unusual positions. Sometimes rabbits lay on their sides when they aren’t feeling well, though it’s worth noting that some of them just find this comfortable.
Change In Appetite
Like many other animals, rabbits often lose their appetite when they don’t feel well. If Floppy isn’t eating, she could be sick. Changes in appetite can also indicate dental issues, which are not uncommon in rabbits. If your furry buddy is dropping food, chewing on one side of her mouth, or only eating her favorite treats, she could be ill.
Changes In Waste
When you clean your bunny’s cage, watch for changes in the size, shape, amount, smell, color, or texture of her waste. These can be indicative of illness. Diarrhea and constipation are definitely red flags, and should be considered medical emergencies.
Tooth Grinding
As noted above, dental issues are quite common in rabbits. Floppy may grind her teeth if they are bothering her. She may also drool, or look swollen around the mouth or face.
Respiratory Issues
Respiratory issues, such as coughing, wheezing, sneezing, and difficulty breathing, can also be warning signs of illness in rabbits. A runny nose or eyes are also red flags.
