Obesity in Kitties

April 1 2018

Did you know that well over half of our feline friends are overweight or obese? I see quite a few pudgy pets in my Cedar Rapids, IA veterinary clinic! Fluffy may still be adorable with some extra pounds, but she’ll be much healthier at or near her ideal weight. Read on to learn about obesity in cats.

Obesity Health Risks

Pudgy pets face many of the same health risks as humans who are obese or overweight, including heart disease, bone/joint issues, diabetes, liver and kidney issues, and skin problems. That extra weight can increase your cute pet’s risks of having reproductive trouble and/or developing complications after surgery. Obesity can even shorten Fluffy’s lifespan!

Feeding Your Feline

Fluffy may be very good at bossing her humans around, but at the end of the day, it’s up to you to determine what your kitty eats. Follow your vet’s recommendations. Pay close attention to portion sizes. Even giving your cat a few extra calories a day can cause her to pack on extra pounds. Treats are fine, but don’t overindulge your cat with fatty snacks. The type of food you offer your furry friend is also important. Opt for premium brands that don’t contain a lot of carb-heavy fillers, such as wheat and soy.

Keeping Kitty Fit

As one may suspect, your kitty’s exercise habits—or lack thereof—also play a huge role in her overall weight. You’ve probably noticed that our feline buddies are, well, rather sleepy. Keep your pet active by offering her lots of toys, and taking time to play with her regularly. Even just a few minutes of pouncing and running will be beneficial. It will also help to offer your cat some pet furniture that encourages her to jump and climb, such as a cat tower.

Helping Your Cat Trim Down

Is your feline pal a furry little butterball? Consult your vet before putting her on a diet. A sudden drop in caloric intake can really wreak havoc with your cat’s metabolism. This can make your pet very sick! Just like people, cats must lose weight at a slow, steady pace to drop extra pounds without compromising their health.
