Is your cat in her golden years? As your pet ages, you will probably see some changes in her behavior and appearance. You may also want to make some minor adjustments to your feline friend’s care regimen. As your Marion, IA veterinarian, I am here to help! Read on for some great tips on senior cat care.
Food
Proper nutrition is an important part of your cat’s care regimen. Offer your kitty high quality, nourishing food. Be careful not to overfeed your pet, though: if your feline friend becomes obese, she could face some very serious medical issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, and bone/joint disorders.
Veterinary Care
As your kitty ages, she may need to come in more often, so she can be monitored for any signs of potential health issues. At home, watch for signs of illness, such as hiding, poor grooming, vomiting, diarrhea, and unusual behavior or vocalizations.
Litterbox
Older cats sometimes have difficulty getting in and out of litterboxes with high walls. You may want to get your feline friend a litterbox with low sides. If your home has multiple stories, keep extras on each floor. That way, your pet won’t have to use the stairs as often.
Playtime
Make sure your cat has lots of playthings, and spend a few minutes a day playing with her. Those regular play sessions will help keep your kitty active, which is great for her physically. Playing also offers mental stimulation, which is also beneficial.
Beds
Cats are sleepy at any age, but senior kitties are particularly drowsy. Your pet could spend up to 20 hours a day snoozing! Make sure your feline friend has lots of comfortable napping spots to choose from. Pick up a few pet beds, and put them in different rooms. You can also simply put soft blankets or pillows into wicker baskets or storage totes.
Kitty Comforts
A few small touches can help keep your cat much more comfortable. If your pet has trouble climbing to her favorite napping spots, consider getting some pet ramps or stairs for her. It’s also not a bad idea to leave a nightlight on after dark, so your kitty can find her way around more easily.
