Senior Dog Care Tips

May 1 2017

Is your dog in or near his golden years? Fido’s breed will play a large role in how fast he ages: large dogs tend to age more quickly than little dogs. However, no matter what type of pup you have, your canine buddy will definitely benefit from some extra TLC as he ages. Here, a Marion, IA veterinarian lists some great senior dog care tips.

Food

Proper nutrition is crucial to your dog’s health and well-being. Offer Fido high-quality, nourishing food. Treats are fine, but choose safe, suitable snacks, and don’t overindulge your pup with fatty foods. Obesity is very bad for our canine friends! Ask your veterinarian for specific recommendations, including serving sizes, supplements, suitable treats, and advice on switching to senior-formula food.

Exercise

As Fido ages, he will slow down, and may become more interested in napping and sunbathing than in chasing that feisty squirrel around. You don’t want to overexert your pet, but don’t let him become a complete couch potato, either. Most dogs will benefit from regular activity, even if it’s just a short daily walk. Ask your veterinarian for specific advice.

Comforts

Sometimes little things make a big difference! A good, orthopedic doggy bed will help your canine pal sleep more comfortably at night. If Fido has trouble getting onto the couch or into the car, get pet ramps or doggy stairs to help him out. Elevated dishes can also be beneficial, as they are much easier for dogs to eat from than bowls on the floor. Proper grooming, including nail trims, will also help keep your pet comfortable.

Veterinary Care

Your veterinarian may recommend more frequent visits as your dog ages. Regular exams allow your veterinarian to monitor Fido for potential health issues. Needless to say, the sooner a problem is caught and treated, the better! Keeping up with your pet’s vaccines and parasite control products is also important. Between appointments, watch for potential signs of sickness. Ask your veterinarian for more information.

Tail Wags

At the end of the day, all Fido wants is to spend time with you. Pay lots of attention to your loyal buddy, and indulge those adorable requests for belly rubs. You may find that you really enjoy this special time in your dog’s life!
